Shortly after the turn of the century, when the historic Shawnee Inn and Country Club were built, Shawnee became known as a quiet retreat for celebrities and the well-to-do. This was comedian Jackie Gleason's golfing home-away-from-home. President Eisenhower vacationed here, and Arnold Palmer met his wife at Shawnee. In the 1970's, Olympic champion Jean-Claude Kelly began his famous ski school at Shawnee Mountain.

From humble beginnings, Shawnee has grown to 2,000 acres and one of the most attractive and successful year-round resorts in the East. Front door to Shawnee Resort is the scenic upper Delaware River - a haven for fishing, wildlife, and water sports. Next door is the 70,000 acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area chocked full of pristine forests, out-of-the-way picnic areas, and millions of spots where visitors can view nature the way it was in more simple times.
