For nearly a century and a half, what is now the Brunswick Bed &
Breakfast played a prominent role in the history of the town.
Originally built by ship builder Robert H. Bowker in 1849, the two and
a half story Greek Revival house stands overlooking the "town
green" and the development of Brunswick . Over the years the
house passed through a number of prominent Brunswick families. In the
early 1900's Bowdoin College professor of International Law, Daniel
Stanwood, and his family lived here. It was during this time that the
large living room extending to the south was added. This room with its
large exposed beams, recycled from a school in Portland, served as
Professor Stanwood's law library. The Stanwood family traveled
extensively and possessed an international circle of friends. Guests
included Edna St. Vincent Millay, Thornton Wilder, English poet
laureate John Mansfield, movie stars John Holt, Randolph Churchill,
and Admirals Macmillon and Richard Byrd.
Today, this gracefully proportioned Greek Revival home has been
lovingly restored and upgraded with your comfort in mind. The
Brunswick Bed & Breakfast is a delightful blend of antique
furnishings and unique accessories with a collection of both old and
new quilts. Guests may choose from any of our seven large guest rooms,
each of bears the name of a quilt pattern. On the main level the twin
front parlors overlooking the "town green" offer you the
inviting warmth of two fireplaces for wintertime comfort or the
wrap-around front porch for summer leisure. Ample off-street parking
is provided for your convenience.
